The article aims to explore the link between symbolic violence and social suffering in the management of young Citizenship Income recipients.
The analysis of several interviews conducted with Job centre operators, social workers and recipients highlights the forms of symbolic violence exercised by operators and those experienced by young recipients. This dynamic generates specific forms of social suffering, fueled by deeply asymmetrical relationships within a social policy system increasingly oriented toward the individual responsibility of the recipient. In this context, Bourdieu’s concept of “field” allowed us to observe how the positioning of the social agents involved in the research gives rise to different representations and practices.
