Abstract

Abstract

This article explores the perceptions of conditionality mechanisms linked to the Italian Citizenship Income (Reddito di Cittadinanza) among benefaiciaries living in marginal areas, with a focus on Taranto, an industrial city in southern Italy. Using 39 semi-structured interviews conducted between 2019 and 2021, the study highlights how recipients interpret and negotiate the obligations imposed by the policy, particularly regarding paid employment. The findings reveal a dual stance: while many beneficiaries legitimize conditionality to distinguish themselves from perceived “exploiters” of the system, they simultaneously emphasize the need for dignified work aligned with their aspirations. The research also underscores the paradox of implementing conditionality in a socio-economic context marked by scarce and precarious job opportunities. By shedding light on the lived experiences of beneficiaries, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the implications of conditional social policies in economically vulnerable settings, offering insights into their effectiveness and challenges.
