Abstract

This essay offers an interpretation of the transformations in work organization from the Toyota system to Industry 4.0. By comparing Fordism, Ohnism, and smart factories, the contribution investigates the elements of continuity and discontinuity in workforce control and coordination mechanisms. The analysis of work organization practices and principles highlights how forms of subjugation are being redefined and shows the relationship between science, technology, and value production.
