Abstract

Abstract:

UNICEF’s Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) is aimed at inviting municipal administrations to activate a series of processes to develop policies and actions to make cities physical places that create relationships, where the principles set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of Children and Adolescents (CRC) are translated into reality. The objective of the program is to guarantee concrete and sustainable results by developing and strengthening the skills needed by local stakeholders – including administrators – to build a systemic approach to work that looks at the planning of policies for childhood and adolescence through the lens of the rights of minors, according to the holistic vision suggested by the CRC. Rights-based programming requires that development of actions, projects and solutions based on evidence resulting from analyses that consider the real needs of children and adolescents, particularly the most disadvantaged ones, shifting attention from individual and sectoral interventions towards coordination that involves the entire municipal administration, civil society, and minors themselves.
