Sito web della rivista

The International journal Civitas Educationis. Education, Politics, and Culture was founded in 2012 within the framework of the activities of the research group in Educational theory and pedagogy that operates in the Faculty of Science of Education at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University.

The founder was Prof. Elisa Frauenfelder, who co-edited the journal with Prof. Enricomaria Corbi until 2014, when the latter assumed the role of editor-in-chief.

Since 2014 the journal has been introduced in the list of the A journals according to the ranking provided by ANVUR, the Italian national agency for the evaluation of the university system and research. Civitas educationis. Education, Politics, and Culture is an international peer-reviewed journal and aims at promoting reflection and discussion on the link between education and politics (understood as a fundamental dimension of human existence). That link has been characterizing Western educational thinking and practices since the time of the ancient Greeks with the bond between paideiaand polis.

The journal intends to be an agora where it is possible to investigate this topic from different perspectives, with both theoretical contributions and empirical research, including within its scope topics such as:
- Educational systems and political systems
- Education and human rights
- Peace education
- Education and citizenship
- Education and differences
- Education and inter-faith dialogue
- Education and social inclusion
- Education, globalization and democracy
- Education and digital culture
- Education and ecology Each issue is organized in three sections:
1. "Symposium", edited by prominent scholars in the field of education and dealing with a specific topic;
2. "Essays", related to the ten thematic areas of the journal and selected through double blind review;
3. "Book reviews", focused on volumes related to the aforementioned areas. The journal features contributions in Italian, English, French, and Spanish. All proposed articles, selected through double blind review, appear in the "Essays" section. Proposals for discussions of volumes relevant to one of the thematic areas of the journal are highly welcome. The journal is interested in all traditions of educational inquiry. As well as appealing to those directly interested in the issue, the journal addresses a wider audience including educators, philosophers and policy-makers. Proposals of essays as well as of book reviews can be submitted to the editor-in-chief and the advisory editorial board through this platform. In order to facilitate a fair and effective review process authors are requested to specify - within the box "Comments for the editor" - to which of the aforementioned thematic areas the proposed paper could belong (please indicate max. 2 areas). Papers that are accepted after the double blind review will be published in the "Essays" section of the journal. The proposals of book reviews will be selected by the advisory editorial board according to criteria relating to the significance and relevance of the proposed book review for the journal as well as its quality. The essay submissions will undergo a process of double blind review, which should last from a minimum of 2 weeks to a maximum of 8 weeks. The reviewers fill in a review form in which they indicate their own evaluation in reference to the following criteria:
1. Coherence with the topics of the journal;
2. Writing quality and clarity;
3. Quality of the argument;
4. Educational and pedagogical focus;
5. Comparison to existing literature;
6. Originality and suggest that the proposal is:
- Accepted
- Accepted with revisions
- Rejected

The Symposium hosted in issue 2/2020 of the Journal is entitled Time and temporality in education and schooling: Introduction to the Symposium edited by Vasco d'Agnese and includes contributions by Carl Anders Säfström; Joris Vlieghe and Piotr Zamojski; Tyson Lewis; Anders Schinkel; Francesco Cappa and Ivano Giuseppe Gamelli; Vittoria Colla.

From the introduction to the Symposium:

Over the last couple of decades, a decisive question about the nature of educational time has emerged in scholarly debates about pedagogy. On the one hand, some scholars have argued that temporality is critical to understanding the nature of educational theories and practises, and thus merits explicit analysis. On the other hand, other scholars have concerned themselves with reformulating homogeneous, linear temporality and imagining alternative forms and flows of educational time. This debate has challenged the idea that such homogeneous, linear educational time is possible or, indeed, desirable. [...] Educational temporality is linear and discontinuous, it ruptures and is binding, it leaps back and forth, returning time and again to starting points and jumping to conclusions. If today's neoliberal educational temporality stifles education, then teachers should ask themselves what the concrete temporality which grounds their praxis moment by moment evokes in their students, and whether and to what extent such a temporality might allow for meaningful transformations to emerge in their teaching and students. In what follows the author of the article shall attempt to give a hint of such a gesture.
